This classic story traced back to the Middle Ages offers insight and wisdom that still rings true today. A construction supervisor visited the worksite, and he wanted to know how the laborers feel about their work.
The first laborer appears to be grumpy and miserable, and when the supervisor asked, “What are you doing?”
This grumpy, miserable laborer snapped back. “What kind of question is that? I don’t think you are blind, are you? The work is so hard, the weather so hot, this is backbreaking work and boring me to death. I have bills to pay and mouths to feed. But in case you have not noticed, I am laying down bricks. Satisfied?”
The supervisor quickly backed off, and he retreated to another bricklayer. This laborer works hard, apparently not as miserable as the first one, and he does his work well.
The supervisor asked the same question, “What are you doing?”
The laborer replied and said, “I am laying down these bricks according to the architect’s plans. The work is not easy, but it earns me reasonable pay to support my wife and kids. It is a decent job. It could be worse.”
What caught the supervisor’s attention is the happy disposition of another bricklayer. He approached him and asked: “And what are you doing?”
With a smile on his face, the joyful laborer, with a feigned look of surprise, says: “Why, can’t you see? and the laborer lifted his arm to the sky. “I’m building a house of God!”
The first laborer works grudgingly but because he has to. He has a job.
The second laborer is a reliable worker, and he has a career.
The third laborer has a joyful disposition not only because he has a job and a career, he knows he has a calling. And this forms the winning attitude is the foundation that would poise him to more significant opportunities and accomplishments. The most important part of a tall building is the building’s foundation. The deeper the foundation, the taller the building can stand.
I have witnessed the growth of Daniel Go and his company. I also know the foundation of his company’s growth and success. And that is his approach to his craft as a response to the calling that God has for him. He has built churches and houses of God. The projects showcased in this beautiful book prove that God has entrusted Architect Daniel Go and his company to build taller, brighter buildings and significant structures because God is his deep foundation over the years.
Architecture is not just a function of concrete and steel; that would be laying bricks. Great pieces of architecture are based on a sense of wonder. It is a response to a higher calling.
Congratulations on your 25th anniversary. Your company is one of the most excellent examples of success. Your faithful work and commitment to excellence made this journey possible. I wish you even more success for the many years to come.
